Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Data Science/AI Researcher to join our team and support the strategic AI school mapping project. The successful candidate will support the development of machine learning models to map school locations and ICT infrastructure as well as to generate new insights that will help Giga achieve its goal of connecting every school to the internet.

Your responsibilities will be…
  • Process satellite imagery as well as other critical datasets.
  • Assess and identify new sources of data for Giga.
  • Curate training samples for ML model development.
  • Develop, evaluate, run, and improve AI/ML models.
  • Analyze different datasets to generate new insights for Giga and its countries.
  • Capture findings in appealing stories and documentation.

To qualify for this position, you will have…
  • Advanced degree in data science, computer science, or a related field *A Master’s degree or a PhD degree and at least one year of postdoctoral or industry experience”.
  • At least five years of experience in Deep Learning and geospatial datasets.
  • Strong experience with machine learning and data analysis using Python.
  • Strong experience with computer vision algorithm development.
  • Experience with satellite imagery analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to present complex technical concepts to a non-technical audience.
  • Experience with cloud services, especially Azure ML.
  • Experienced and comfortable with remote team dynamics, process, and tools (Slack, Zoom, etc.)
  • Developing country work experience and/or familiarity with emergency conditions is considered an asset.
  • Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) or a local language is an asset.
Travel:
  • The consultant is expected to travel to Geneva one time (1 trip), for a stay of 4-5 nights.
  • The consultant is responsible for arranging his/her own travel, including visa and travel insurance.
Payment details and further considerations:
  • Payment of professional fees will be based on the submission of agreed deliverables. UNICEF reserves the right to withhold payment in case the deliverables submitted are not up to the required standard or in case of delays in submitting the deliverables on the part of the consultant.
  • Consultant is responsible for his/her own health and travel insurance.
  • Consultant is responsible to arrange his/her own travel, including visa.
